HOMEOWNER GUIDE / 02

Better decisions.
A better renovation.

A little preparation helps turn a long wish list into a project that fits your home and the way you live.

Separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves.

Write down the three problems you most want to solve. A kitchen may need better storage more than a bigger footprint. A bathroom may need easier access more than a new layout. This keeps important choices in focus when the budget needs to stretch.

Choose a finish level early.

Collect a few images that show what you like and explain the details that matter: cabinet style, flooring, light, color, storage or outdoor use. Inspiration is a starting point; your home’s dimensions and conditions determine what can be built.

Think about the complete scope.

A replacement window is more than the window itself. A deck may need footings, stairs, railings and access planning. A finished basement may need attention before the visible finishes begin. Ask what preparation and related work the estimate includes.

Leave room for the unknowns.

Renovation can uncover conditions that are hidden during the first visit. Discuss a contingency suited to the age and scope of your home, and decide how you want to handle optional upgrades if costs change.

Plan for living through the work.

Think about parking, deliveries, pets, children, storage and daily routines. For a kitchen, plan a temporary food-preparation area. For a bathroom, consider the other facilities available. Clear communication about household needs helps everyone prepare.

Compare estimates thoughtfully.

  • Check that each estimate describes a comparable scope and finish level.
  • Identify allowances, exclusions and owner-supplied materials.
  • Ask about preparation, disposal, access and trade coordination.
  • Discuss the expected sequence and how changes are handled.
  • Choose based on the whole plan, not a number without context.

Common homeowner questions

Do you take on smaller repairs?

Yes. Tell us the repair, your town and your preferred timing. We’ll discuss whether the scope fits and how to plan the visit.

Can I bring my own ideas or materials?

Bring your ideas. If you want to supply materials, discuss quantities, compatibility, timing and responsibility before ordering.

Can you coordinate other trades?

We have a network that includes electricians, plumbers, site contractors and landscapers. The agreed scope determines who is involved and who is responsible for each part.

Are the online prices final quotes?

No. They are rough planning examples. Your written estimate depends on your home, scope, selections and conditions.
